Still working on my thesis, and other stuff

My thesis is drawing ever closer, and it seems that whenever it gets busy at our house, it really gets busy. To top it all off I have two brothers getting married between now and my thesis show, plus I am going to the college art association conference in LA in February. So while I am working on my thesis, I am also shooting Bridals and Engagements for both brothers (the bridals are for their fiance's, not them). Since it has been a while since I have posted anything wedding related, here is something, as well as some new images from my thesis work.

Ok, so the last time that I really actually posted was at the beginning of grad school. That just goes to show how intense this really is. It has all been for the better, I will soon be graduating, my show is going to be March 5-9 at Studio 102 with a closing reception on the the 9th. Hope you all can come. Here are some of the images that I have been working on.

I have been working in macroscapes, literally. I collect old packaging materials and photograph the little passages that can exist in the small folds and corners.

New Pictures

It has been over three months since I posted (with the exception of the last one that I did three minutes ago). I know that all twelve of you that follow my blog are anxiously awaiting each and every new post and wish that I would do one every other day, but alas my time is spent pursuing many passions. To update my blog sometimes falleth quite short on my list of to do's. I haven't been idle I can tell you that much. First bit of news, I have been accepted to Utah State University's Masters of Fine Arts program (MFA for short). My wife and I will soon be moving to Logan where all our dreams come true (that is Logan right?). I'll post a little bit of my portfolio that I submitted later (probably after I have graduated at the rate that I am going). But since all of our family is here in Salt Lake and we will probably still be coming down once a month or more I can still do any photography necessary in SL or in Logan. Let's call this an expansion of the photography business. So my wife and I have been very busy trying to sell our house and make all the necessary arrangements and that is why the blog was neglected.

Anyway, this blog has some senior pictures (bet you didn't know I did those either did ya), some families, and a wedding I did this spring and one I did last summer but forgot to post (I don't know how that happened). Anyway, enjoy and if you like what you see, leave a comment.

Retouching

Due to the request of my wife, this post is dedicated to retouching. Retouching is a service that is included with all family, bridal and engagement sessions. Some retouching is very simple, such as basic color balancing, teeth whitening, blemish removal, etc. Others can be a little tricky, such as head swaps, thinning, building removals, changes of background, insertion of people, removal of people (happens very seldomly), the occasional color change of an outfit, etc. I try and compose my photographs in such a way that minimal retouching is necessary, but in a large family there is usually at least one kid not smiling or someone blinking, and as much as the parents want to print that picture as large as they want with the kid giving a silly face just to teach them a lesson, we would rather have a nice portrait on the wall. Below are some examples of some retouching I have done. I have included the before and afters along with a little explanation of what was done (albeit a little vague, you have to guess who it was done on.)

This image had two head swaps, some thinning, and building removal, along with standard color and tonal adjustments.

This image is a little easier to pick out. Here I did one head swap of the little girl.

This one had multiple head swaps and a little background alteration. Some of the parents opted not to switch their kids faces, just so they could remember them just the way they were.

The Salt Lake Temple

Alright these lovely pictures were of a traditional wedding at the Salt Lake Temple and the Joseph Smith Memorial building. We were a little worried because it was supposed to rain and snow during the temple pictures. This was a really great couple to work with. They were very gracious and did everything that I told them to do which made for some really great pictures. You could definitely tell that they were in love and that their marriage will last forever. Good luck you two.

Never assume a seat is dry, especially if you are going to sit on it!

The last wedding I did I sat in a puddle, enough said. Just watch where you sit. Anyhow these pictures were fun because it offered an opportunity to photograph in a place I never have photographed but have been to many times. The Gateway Mall in Downtown Salt Lake City. Word of advice, call the front desk first before you go to take pictures. The little girl in the picture is the daughter of the bride and she was actually really good considering how cold it was. The temperature was around 20 degrees. Luckily we got some really good pictures with her in it.

Family Picture Special!

For those of you who want family pictures out there I have decided to do a "Holiday Special". It will be good until the end of this year. I figure this is the time of year that is busiest for family pictures as most families are together around the holidays.

I will be charging $200 and that includes a 16 x 20. I will retouch the large image and you will still receive the negatives (digital files) to do any other prints that you'd like. During the photo shoot I will also do all the family breakdowns as well.

If you would like larger than a 16 x 20:

for $240 you would get a 20 x 24

for $280 you would get a 24 x 30

You do need to let me know when booking which package you would like. I do on location shoots and can do either indoor or outside pictures. If you have any other questions please contact me at

Summer Time!

This summer has been busier than ever. I did families, weddings, engagements, bridals, and pics for my own family. I don't know why but I keep forgetting about my blog. It's my only real way to show off my work to others. I really should pay attention more. Anyway, these are some pics from some new locations. The first little family is at Gardner Village. I love this place because there are so many places to go, but it can also drive you nuts because of all the people. I like to go there during the week because there are fewer people there than on Saturdays.

This little place was suggested to me by this bride. It is a home at the very end of Walker Lane and was owned by one of the original Walker brothers. It was amazing. The barn was bigger than my house, the lake behind the bride was stocked with rainbow trout, and the gardens were immaculate. They even had horses and mini ponies. This was truly enjoyable.

The bride below was a referral from another bride. We did her Bridals at Murray Park and I was given my first opportunity to shoot "Groomals" (Photos of the groom). Also I don't know how many people actually see my blog, so if you have checked it out or are just a blogstocker, feel free to leave comments or suggestions. I love to get feedback!

It's been a while

Well, it's been a while. I haven't had too much time to post lately because I have been so busy. I guess that's a good thing. It hasn't all been my own stuff that I have been busy with. I don't know if I mentioned this before but I am also a contract photographer with STC digital. I do a lot of weddings, bridals, engagements and family portraits through them. I won't be posting any of that on here because it's not my company. They pay me well and they do a great job too. But I have done some photography in the last few months. Here are some of my favorite shots. I hope you like them.

Here are some images from a recent wedding I did on a particularly rainy day at the Salt Lake Temple. I manipulated a few using photoshop just for fun, like the pink umbrella on the black and white. This couple was a lot of fun to work with and the whole family was very happy to have their pictures taken in the rain. All in all, it made for a memorable wedding.
